Pandillas/Gangs of El Salvador

San Salvador, El Salvador, Tuesday, May 15, 2007. Luis Romero "El Pancita" founder of Homies United and a member of ¨18¨ who prefers the term ¨calmed down" (calmado) to x-gang member, stands by a mural outside the Centro de Formación y Orientación founded by Father Antonio Rodriguez. The Center is an organization which strives to help troubled youth find an alternative to gang life. Many members have been killed by governement sanctioned death squads and gangs, others have found jobs and lead relatively stable lives. The center makes a point of not introducing religion into the rehabilitation process.
